In the existing modern shoe industry, there are three main measurement systems: French, English and the CIS number system. Each of them has its own characteristics.

According to the CIS number system, the size of the foot is determined in millimeters, and measurements are taken from the most protruding part of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. When measuring, the foot must be bare. This method is the easiest to measure the exact size of your feet, therefore it is the most common.

In the French method of measuring foot size, the insole is the standard, and the unit of measurement between the sizes is a stroke of 2/3 cm long. The insole also includes a small allowance for decorative finishing, 10 millimeters long.

The English system also involves the use of insoles, but it is much more accurate and pedantic than the French one. The British take the starting point for measuring the foot of a newborn child, the length of which is equal to 4 inches or 10, 16 cm. The size of each subsequent number increases by 1/3 inch from the standard.

Correct foot measurement

In practice, it is recommended to measure the foot as follows. To do this, you need to stand with both feet barefoot on a snow-white blank sheet of paper and ask a loved one to circle your feet with a pencil or felt-tip pen.

To get more reliable data, the pencil must be pressed against the leg as tightly as possible and kept slightly at an incline. Thereafter, the length of each obtained print is measured. In the case when one leg turns out to be larger in size than the other, it is recommended to equalize by a larger value.

To determine the individual volume of the shoe, one more measurement must be made. The distance from the outer edge of the foot to the inner one, which runs along the back side through the highest point of its arch. In fact, this point is located near the bend of the foot and is called the instep of the foot.

Measuring foot size in babies

When measuring a child's legs, proceed in the same way as measuring an adult's leg. The child must stand without fail, and in no case should not sit, because in the standing position the foot flattens a little and at the same time increases in size.

It is also necessary to carefully monitor that the baby does not tighten his fingers. In this case, the measurements will not be taken quite correctly, and the shoes will be smaller than the required size.

When buying shoes for a child, you need to make all measurements of the child's feet immediately before the purchase itself, while wearing tights or socks. It is also necessary for adults to do it if the purchased shoes are planned to be worn in the cold season.
