Thunderstorms are especially common in early summer. It is dangerous due to lightning, which travels with great speed and carries high electrical discharges. In order to avoid irreversible consequences, when a thunderstorm approaches, it is necessary to follow a few simple rules.

Before a thunderstorm, there is a temporary lull, and the wind strength also changes sharply. When the thunderstorm has already begun, determine how far you are from the epicenter. Count how many seconds elapsed from the flash of lightning to the clap of thunder. Distance is calculated by the speed of sound. According to the calculation formula, one second equals 300 meters. For example, you counted 6 seconds, which means 1800 meters to the epicenter of a thunderstorm. Accordingly, you have time to hide. If thunder has thundered right away, urgently seek shelter, since you are in the most dangerous place.
Step 2
Water is a good conductor of electricity. Therefore, if a thunderstorm caught you near a lake or river, do not swim under any circumstances. Move away from the reservoir at a distance of 30 meters. Go to the nearest settlement, village to find shelter. Remember to remove metal objects from your pockets.
Step 3
When you are at home during a thunderstorm, unplug all electrical appliances from electrical outlets. Turn off lights, close windows and doors. Please note that in case of a thunderstorm, in no case should you heat the stove, since lightning can get through the pipe, because the smoke has high conductivity. Disconnect your mobile, landline phone. Stay away from them until the thunderstorm is over, as the magnetic field attracts more electrical discharges.

Tall and lonely trees are more often struck by lightning. Therefore, if you are in the forest, find a small shrub, squat down and wait out the thunderstorm in this position. Please note that you cannot stand up to your full height, and also lie down on the ground, since you need to take up as little space on the surface as possible.

If you are driving a car during a thunderstorm, gradually stop, park on the side of the road and turn off the car. When a thunderstorm caught you on a motorcycle, scooter or other open transport, leave it immediately and move at a distance of at least 30 meters.

Find shelter if you are outdoors when a thunderstorm is approaching. It is not recommended to use an umbrella as the metal spokes conduct electricity. Move away from high voltage poles and lonely trees. Please note that it is dangerous to be in wet clothes during a thunderstorm, as an electric discharge spreads through the water at the fastest rate.
