The history of purple gold

The mention of purple gold first appeared during the archaeological excavations of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1931. Many different ornaments were found in his tomb, some of which had an unusual purple hue. At that time, many scientists and archaeologists were struggling to unravel the composition and properties of the metal from which products of extraordinary beauty were made.

The secret of the mysterious alloy was revealed only after a few years. It never occurred to anyone that ordinary aluminum gives such a magnificent color to metal. The features of purple gold were first described in his scientific work by the American scientist - physicist Robert Wood. After that, he did not stop only at revealing the composition of the alloy: he himself managed to recreate some of those decorations that were found in the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh. Today, some of these items are on display at the Cairo Museum.

It was only at the discovery of the purple gold alloy that the study of its properties did not stop. The material attracted the attention of the ordinary English metallurgist Roberts-Austen. It was he who managed to find out the exact proportions of gold and aluminum, as well as to achieve the transparency of the alloy, which began to resemble a purple diamond more than metal. As a result of the experiments of the physicist and metallurgist, the sample of the new precious metal was also established - 750.

Where purple gold is applied

The use of purple gold is very common in various industries. It is used by jewelers, making various jewelry. Also, purple gold is successfully used in their creative activities by artists, painting them with works from porcelain. Another application for purple gold was found by chemists when they managed to create a solution of a similar color on the basis of a precious metal. It is added to molten glass, resulting in ruby-colored products.

What is the price of purple gold

Since it is quite difficult to find items made of purple gold in an ordinary jewelry store, it is very difficult to name the exact cost per gram of metal. To date, there is only information that the jewelry weighing 19 carats, inlaid with purple gold inserts, was sold for 55 thousand dollars. This cost is due to the high complexity of making the alloy, therefore, at 750 purity of purple gold, it costs many times more than usual. However, even the high price does not prevent the growing popularity of this metal.
