In order to make a regular stainless steel knife more durable, it can be hardened. The hardening process is also called tempering. With a certain skill, vacation can be done at home. What is the correct way to temper the knife and increase the strength of the blade?

Necessary

  • - a knife for hardening;
  • - muffle furnace;
  • - oil (antifreeze, autol, working off);
  • - material for polishing, chrome plating of steel.

Instructions

Step 1

Preheat the muffle furnace to 1030-1050 ° C. After the oven reaches the desired temperature, keep it on for an hour and turn it off. The temperature in the furnace must be strictly up to 1100 ° C, otherwise irreversible processes of coarsening of the sorbitol structure of the steel will occur during calcination. It becomes viscous and loses its impact properties.

Step 2

Place the knife blade in the oven. It is first necessary to remove the handle, high temperatures deform almost 100% of the material from which the handle is made. The time for high tempering of the blade is calculated as 10 minutes per mm of thickness. You can visually determine the degree of hardening by the color of the blade. It should be the same color as the inside of the oven.

Step 3

Pull the blade out of the oven and lower it strictly vertically into a container of oil, gently wiggle it along the blade so that the blade profile does not lead from excessive pressure to the soft hot steel.

Step 4

After waiting until the steel temperature drops to 300 ° C (bluish tint on the steel surface), place the blade in the muffle furnace, presetting the temperature to 200-300 ° C. The low vacation process should last 3-4 hours.

Step 5

Remove the blade from the oven, straighten it if necessary, and let it cool in its natural environment in the air.

Step 6

Polish, chrome, sharpen the blade, place it on the handle.
