A barcode is a unique encrypted number. In the barcode, you can hide information about the manufacturer, name and price of the product. The barcode itself was developed in the United States of America back in 1949.

How to assign a barcode

  • - application for joining GS1 RUS;
  • - money to pay the entrance fee.

Step 1

The only organization that officially develops a standard for assigning bar codes in Russia, being an authorized representative of the international GSI, is the Association for Automatic Identification "UNISCAN / GS1 RUS". Other companies of this kind, opened in Russia, are only intermediaries. Check the license for the right to operate. It is possible that these are scammers, and the barcode of the European EAN standard cannot be obtained from them for sure.

Step 2

The barcode can be obtained shareware. To do this, your manufacturing organization must join GS1 RUS. To complete this step, please write your application for membership, enclosing a list of products to receive a barcode. After considering the application, transfer the entrance fee to the organization's current account, the amount of which is 25,000 rubles. You can find the completed application form on the GS1 RUS website (

Step 3

You should get a barcode in the form of a set of numbers that actually make it up. The numbers represent: - country code; - GSI company prefix; - your specific product number, based on the list attached to the application. The European barcode contains 13 digits, the American one 12.

Step 4

When the barcode numbers are received, you need to design the label and the location of the code. The size of the barcode also depends on your choice. It is important that the numbers are well readable and easily scanned by the supermarket barcode scanner.

Step 5

Note that the classic color for a barcode is black (or another dark color, such as dark brown) on a white or (oddly enough) a light shade of red.

Step 6

After printing a barcode on a laser printer or in a printing house, the final version must be checked by a verifier (a special device for checking the correctness of the barcode and the ability to read it).
