For almost a century, scientists and researchers around the world have been struggling to solve the death of the Titanic superliner. During this time, many versions of the disaster have arisen. Such realistic reasons as a German torpedo or a floating bomb, the mystical curse of the pharaohs (an ancient Egyptian mummy was transported on a ship) and others were eliminated, more and more new ones took their place.

Why sank
Why sank

The main and most famous reasons for the sinking of the Titanic have long been considered two of the many put forward. The first was that on the way, the ship entered the zone of cold waters of the Atlantic, which is teeming with drifting icebergs. The ship ran into one of them, having received a ninety-meter hole on the starboard side, below the waterline. Water rushed swiftly into the compartments of the steamer, in less than three hours the front of the ship became so heavy that, having gone under the water, it raised the stern high above sea level, from which the Titanic's hull broke in two and went to the bottom. According to another version, a fire broke out in the cargo compartments of the ship. For several days in a row, coal fuel was burning, and the captain did not see an opportunity to extinguish it with the forces of the team in the roadstead. For this reason, allegedly, it was decided to go to the port of destination at full speed, with the risk of hitting an iceberg, in order to extinguish the fire in the harbor with the help of coastal services. ice mountain, if not for the explosion due to fire. But, as time has shown, neither the first nor the second version could stand the test. As the results of repeated American-French expeditions, in which the Ardo lander and the Nautilus bathyscaphe participated, the ship's hull really burst, but not as a result of the explosion, and the ninety-meter hole does not exist at all. But there are a number of cracks, as a result of the plating at the joints of the skin, through which, apparently, water got into the ship's compartments. Metal samples of rivets and skin sheets showed that they were made of low-quality iron, with a high sulfur content. During the collision with the iceberg, the hull just burst at the seams. In addition, scientists in absentia dropped the charges against the deceased captain that he could save the liner from rapid flooding by ordering to open the bulkheads between the compartments, and thereby excluding the bow "dive" of the ship. Researchers created a hundred times smaller model of the Titanic, caused the same damage, opened the bulkheads - the model sank half an hour earlier, having received a strong side roll. Today experts are increasingly inclined to believe that the Titanic was doomed to death at the shipyard … It could have been designed to be actually reliable, but they were in a hurry, they could have built it with better quality, but they saved money. As a result, more than a thousand people died.
