Development of the Typhoon began in 2010, when, as part of a new concept for the development of vehicles for the Russian army, the Ministry of Defense needed highly standardized vehicles of increased security. All cars created according to this concept should not only be well protected from small arms and land mines, but also have modern mine protection, be able to carry a wide variety of equipment.

Design

The Typhoon has a NATO-class 3D booking. This means that the car must withstand the explosion of a high-explosive charge weighing 8 kg in TNT equivalent under any place of the KAMAZ. Protection against bullets corresponds to level 4 and protects against firing from all large-caliber machine guns and anti-tank rifles, which are in service with the Russian Federation. Moreover, the armor can withstand hits from 30mm aircraft cannons. Bullet resistance of glasses exceeds all requirements of GOSTs and provide protection even against a large-caliber Vladimirov machine gun, which is considered the second most powerful small arms weapon in the world. Bulletproof tires, size 16, 00-R20, with anti-explosion inserts, with a pressure regulation system and automatic air pumping in them. The crew compartment is equipped with loopholes. A remote-controlled machine gun can be installed on the roof.

Armored and unarmored models with 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 wheel configurations are planned as modifications. Cabover Typhoons will be produced by KAMAZ, bonneted Typhoons by URAL.

The seats are equipped with devices for securing personal weapons of the crew, seat belts and head restraints. The seats are attached not only to the floor, but also to the ceiling. This is done in order to reduce the effect of the explosion on the crew when the Typhoon is detonated. The crew compartment is equipped with a filter ventilation unit and an air conditioner. There are two ramp doors: at the stern and on the side, as well as emergency hatches on the roof.

In 2010-2013, "Typhoon" passed factory tests, as a result of which it was decided to release 2 prototypes for testing by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. In 2014, the car should be put into service.

KAMAZ is equipped with an innovative on-board information and control system, which is a complex of technical means and electronic computing equipment, which automatically generates recommendations for maneuvering and using weapons. This system collects information about what is happening around using 8 video cameras, regulates the engine, warns of a dangerous roll, gives recommendations about the optimal speed, and performs navigation functions.

The suspension of all wheels is independent, hydropneumatic. The ground clearance can be changed on the go from the driver's seat in the range from 185 to 575 mm. Disc brakes with anti-lock and traction control systems.
