Sealing wax - a mixture of resins, dyes and other fillers - you may need to decorate the original gift wrapping, seal documents or important letters, as well as for some other needs. Sometimes it is sufficient to purchase a special store set for wax seals. If you need a large amount of a viscous liquid (for example, when clogging wine bottles), then you need to melt the finished raw materials or make sealing wax yourself.

Necessary

  • - ready-made solid sealing wax;
  • - shellac (rosin);
  • - turpentine;
  • - cinnabar (or another dye to your taste);
  • - magnesia (talc, chalk, gypsum or other fillers);
  • - turpentine;
  • - essential oil (optional);
  • - a container for melting;
  • - tin plate;
  • - a spoon;
  • - seal;
  • - fat.

Instructions

Step 1

Choose the right souvenir products for decorating letters and gifts - it will save you a lot of the hassle associated with making sealing wax at home. Sets (both domestic and imported) are usually sold with wax sticks of different colors and brass seals. It is also convenient to use special candles - you just need to set fire to the wick, and the molten liquid will drip onto the surface to be sealed.

Step 2

Buy a prepackaged lump sealing wax if you need to make a lot of mix. This raw material (like wax sticks) will have to be melted. You can purchase a special heater-sealing wax and follow the instructions. Household utensils are also used to melt sealing wax; a stainless steel turk with a heat resistant handle or enamelled cast iron is recommended.

Step 3

Try making your own wax mixture. First you need to melt the shellac, turpentine and cinnabar in a ratio of 12 parts, 8 and 9 in a suitable container). Stir the mixture constantly until it becomes mushy and smooth. Then add in small portions a mixture of magnesia and turpentine (3 and 2 parts). Other fillers can also be added to homemade sealing wax: finely ground chalk, gypsum, talc or heavy spar; it is permissible to replace expensive shellac with more affordable rosin.

Step 4

Wait until bubbles appear on the surface of the molten homogeneous mixture. Mix everything thoroughly again. Next, you need to take a sample of the resulting sealing wax with a spoon. Drop it on a piece of tin - the substance will quickly solidify, and you will be able to appreciate its color and density. If necessary, you can add dye to the hot mass, increase the amount of fillers and drip a little essential oil. Try the wax on paper. If it is of high quality, then it should not bounce off the surface, blur and penetrate through the structure of the sealed material.

Step 5

Remove the sealing wax from the heat and let cool slightly. The impression can now be taken. To do this, you can use a special souvenir brass seal with a handle, which is recommended to be lightly greased. After making the stamp, lift the seal up sharply. If you need to seal a large number of objects, dip them one by one in a viscous mass.
