A passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation is not the only identity document, but it is exactly what most organizations require. An invalid passport must be replaced; a temporary identity card may be issued to a citizen for the period of production of a new one.

The main reason why a passport replacement is required is the expired date. For 30 days after reaching the age of 20 and 45, the passport is still legitimate and must be accepted as an official identity document. Be careful when getting your next passport. This should be done only after the birthday, if the date of issue of the document and the date of your birth coincide, the passport is invalid.

Change of personal data

Change of surname, first name, patronymic, date of birth at the request of a citizen is automatically accompanied by a change of passport. In the event that a citizen has changed his surname, for example, after marriage, he must appear at the FMS (Federal Migration Service) and initiate the replacement of the document on his own. When changing sex, the passport must be replaced in the usual way ─ the replacement period is from a week to 2 months, depending on the chosen office of the FMS. A certificate of gender reassignment is required, which is issued by the registry office, and a new birth certificate, all other documents are standard.

Change in appearance

Serious changes in appearance, for example, a radical change in hairstyle, plastic surgery and any other changes that make the appearance unrecognizable are also a reason for changing your passport. If you cut your hair short and dyed it in a bright color, and the passport photo shows a woman with a strict square, it is likely that such a passport will be refused to be accepted as a legitimate document, and this will be legal.

Damage to the document

Exposure to liquids, fire and other damaging factors will invalidate the passport. Too much worn edges, tears, stains from inaccurate storage, creases on the pages also refer to damage in which the passport requires replacement.

Random notes, glued pages, and childish pranks will rob you of your main identity document. Children's drawings in a passport are one of the most common reasons for replacing a document.

A citizen has the right to contact any branch of the FMS. However, the issuance of a passport at the department where the previous one was received or at the place of registration takes 7-10 working days, in other cases, the production of a passport takes 2 months. The house book is not an obligatory document, the FMS is obliged to make a request on its own, if you are unable to provide it or contact the FMS not at the place of permanent registration. It is necessary to take with you a military ID, birth certificates of children, a marriage certificate or its dissolution, so that the FMS employees can enter the necessary data into the new passport.

A fine is provided for damage to a document; in fact, FMS employees rarely resort to administrative penalties. You can make an appointment with the FMS on the website of public services ─ this will save time.
